DirecTV has been running a commercial promoting its TV service that takes a classic movie scene from the Poltergeist. It features Craig T. Nelson, who played the dad in the 1982 movie, and Heather O'Rourke who played little Carol Ann.
When I first saw this commercial I laughed and then started thinking about how it was kind of pushing it. Although her death wasn't attributed to the spooky encounters the cast claimed to happen on set, it is a little much for me. Despite the fact that I don't really like it doesn't mean the ad wasn't original, catchy and thought-provoking.

i just saw this commercial (which was difficult because youtube already removed it) and I think the commercial is a fine tribute to the movie and the actors in it. Some people are just too sensitive.
My favorite so far has been Don Zimmerman's Travis County tax-assessor.
In the ad, the camera quickly pans foot to head on a man (Zimmerman?) sitting in a bathtub filled with ice. A line of blood runs from the man’s midsection to the tub’s edge, where it trickles onto the floor. A voice-over says:
"This guy just sold a kidney to pay his property tax bill."
Muhahaha! I friggin love it! I want to move to Travis County JUST so that I can vote for this guy!
Loved the movie myself.
If anyone should be sensitive it should be the mother, and apparently she OK'ed the commercial. Since she gave the thumbs up, then I have no problem with it.
Bottom line: the mother approved the ad. If it's okay for her then it should be okay for the rest of the viewers. And I really like those commercials I am always in awe at how they do them and make them look so real.
I think it's an intesting idea for a commercial. Controversial material like this is what generates a response which is the exact point of an ad. If the mother ok'd it then why should anyone else care?
I personally didn't see anything wrong with this commercial. If Heather O'Rourke's own mohter didn't have a problem with it, then why should any of us?
I think people just want to have something to bitch about. They just want something to make controversial.
Another thing, I think it was kinda smart to have it come out around Halloween too.
I could spend hours on youtube watching banned commercials. They are clever and creative. Viewers need to take into account the novelty of the original movie.
wow, I have seen this ad plenty of times and had no idea it was controversial. It gives me the willies though, I havent decided if it's Craig T. Nelsons combover, or the fact that I hate scary movies.
Either way, I am really tired of how much criticism creative material gets for being "offensive." People need to either embrace creativity or ignore it if they cant handle it. Amen.
the little girl died a long time ago. It's a great commercial and somewhat funny! If the parents gave their consent then it should be ok. Using a famous movie in an ad is a great way to promote a service. It gets people talking!
I agree, some people are too sensitive and should toughen up or change the channel!

Man, sensitive people are okay, but people that are too sensitive drive me nuts.
