"Facebook said on Friday it had removed several pages from its site used by Italian neo-Nazis to incite violence after European politicians accused the Internet social networking site of allowing a platform to racists."
Facebook does support the free flow of information, but these particular pages violated their terms of use. Theses neo-Nazi pages had made threatening remarks to Italian Roma, which are gypsies.
Simon Samuels, a man interviewed for the article who works for a Jewish human rights group, suggested that Facebook should try and create a technology to help filter out "hate speech."
I think it is good that Facebook removed the pages, although Facebook gives a free flow of information, if someone or groups are being threatned the company should step in and take action.

This is great. This type of shit should not be tolerated period. Whether it's word-of-mouth or on the Internet it needs to stop, the year is 2008 and we should be able to move past immature shit like this. There have also been stories about Facebook taking down pages with racist and threatening remarks about President-elect Obama. One football player from the University of Texas was even kicked off of the team because of the racist remarks he made on his Facebook page regarding Obama. It truly is sad to see people who have so much hatred this day in age just because others aren't like them. This just goes to show we as a people still have a long way to go before this world can have the peace it needs.
i have mixed feelings about this.
no, i dont think it's right to encorage violence like these facebook pages were doing, however, people do have the right to free speech.
i can see both sides of this one. i can respect the people who are all about free speech on htese sights and being able to say what they want, but i can also respect the people who think things liek this must be taken off of such social sites as facebook
i have an opinion, but i guess not a definite one.
I wish it could go back to a simple college social network. Now we have to monitor and be cautious about what we say because it could affect our lives. Yes, I agree too that there should be a filter for hate speech which could lead to hate crimes.
I agree and I'm not saying this because I'm
Jewish but it definitly affects my opinion. Hate speech is just wrong and should be filtered on a website everyone is allowed to use now. Kids used to not be allowed on it but now it gives access to all!!!!
I do have little tolerance when it comes to hate speech. I agree that it was their right to remove the pages if they violated their terms of use.
I think it was necessary for Facebook to pull that group off of their site. Yes, people should be able to exercise their free speech, but when violent actions are resulting because of this group then it's obvious that the page needs to come down. These crazy people need to know that Facebook doesn't support their group. Two thumbs up for Facebook!!
