Miss California's Bust

So, if you haven’t heard, everyone is upset with the answer Miss California gave to Perez Hilton’s question about same-sex marriage. When she was asked how she felt about gay marriage she clearly stated she was against it. From the way she was raised and how she believes the country delegates things, she doesn’t believe in gay marriage at all. I was a little taken back by her answer because she is representing California and a gay man is the one who asked her the question. Also the fact that there were many gay men who were helping her with her pageant and some of the judges were gay also.

I understand she should have her own views and feelings, and doesn’t have to like gay marriage. But with how the world is evolving and people are states are starting to allow gay marriage you have to have some leverage on what your answer to that sort of questions would be. She doesn’t have to like gay marriage, but she also needs to understand that people and rules are changing. She could have worded it differently I guess, but still her answer kept her from winning in my opinion.

I don't think this should have kept her from winning. I understand they did not like her answer but they also asked for her opinion. If they did not want her real opinion then they should have asked something that she could have given facts about instead. I do find it a little funny that California legalized gay marriage and she is representing them going against gay marriage.

This might have been the hardest question to have and obviously can make or break your place in the contest. I am in media law this semester and we are learning similar cases. Prior to taking this class I had views against same-sex marriage. However, now after looking at the rights for all US citizens, I am for the rights for everyone, therefore do not think gays shouldn't be able to marry by law. Miss California should have been more prepared for this question. I find it no coincidence that they asked someone from California. She should have expected it and known how to answer better and recover without controversy.

there is no way should could have given a politically correct answer to this question. If she was all for it, people would be against her, and since shes against it, people are against her. with this controversial of a topic, I think she answered well. SHe said she was happy for those people who are married but she PERSONALLY doesn't believe in gay marriage. Since when are we not allowed to have opinions. I think this whole topic is completely fabricated and exaggerated by Perez. Its dumb.

I am completely supportive of equality for everyone. All people should share the same rights and not be discriminated against for sexuality, race, or religion. With that said, Perez Hilton exploited the situation. Hilton is the poster boy for free speech and shares his opinion daily and freely in his blog. Why is it ok for him to stand behind his beliefs and yet slaughter the image of a person who shares opposite views? GET OVER IT.

I don't think Miss California's answer was controversial regarding gay marriage. She doesn't personally believe in gay marriage and she is rightfully entitled to her own opinion. Perez Hilton's question should not have hindered her from moving farther in the competition. I think Perez Hilton is making a big deal about Miss California's question for selfish reasons. It's strange to think that Miss California is getting more media coverage than the new Miss USA.

I agree with what Chelsia said. I belive in individual equality, the right to make personal orientation decisions and I believe in having the power of your own opinions. I also belive that free speech is one of the most incredible and important concepts our country stands for. While Miss Cali could have worded her response a little better, she was in a huge spotlight and was asked a difficult question, I can't say I wouldn't have fumbled a little myself. Perez Hilton is acting hypocritical and unfair and his actions should be ignored.

I do think this had severe reprecussions in her chances of winning. However, I don't think it should have. This was by far the most difficult question to answer, and Miss California is being scrutinized for her answer as well as how she responded and who her judges were. If Perez didn't think there were two answers to his question or he didn't want to hear the other answer he should have asked another question.

I think this has become more of a side show for Perez and his gay agenda. Anyone could have been picked to answer that question but it seems almost too suiting that the California girl was chosen to answer. The new prop 8 bill really caused a lot of issues and this is only fanning the flames. I for one am not against gay marriage and I don't think that whether you are for or against it should have a huge effect on where your social standing is. I just think the gov't needs to stay out of it all.
