The celebrity web site TMZ.com recently released a photo of a beaten and bruised R&B singer, Rihanna. Though the Los Angeles Police Department are still investigating whether or not it was one of their own that leaked the picture, the National Organization of Women see it as somewhat of a blessing in disguise, "If it could happen to Rihanna, it could happen to anyone," said Kim Gandy, president of the National Organization for Women. Seeing this image would make young girls more aware and possibly help them to see that it is not, under any circumstances ok for a man to hit a woman. It is still not certain whether or not the photo is in fact Rihanna, but sources are leaning toward yes. "Maybe it is a good idea if it's her, if young girls see this," said Susan Murphy-Milano, a Chicago author and advocate for battered women.

The world of sensational journalism has cross the line. The photographs were probably obtained legally, but morally it is a crime. Professor Martinez would love to bring up this situation under his lecture on privacy law. I think it shows a negative image to young men and women that this is acceptable behavior on the behalf of the accuser and the media outlet who leaked the photo.
I am so sad to see that these kinds of things are being published on media oulets. This is just yet another example of negative exposure that kids will follow. This just shows how lightly the media take serious issues. It is extremely inappropriate. Just like exposing eating disorders. Kids do follow the croud and what's popular. I wouldn't be supprised if some follow Chris Brown's actions.
I understand how they are trying to turn this around and say that is could be a good thing for girls to see, however people looking at this pic are not doing to help better themselves. They are doing it because they are curious as to what she looked like and how bad it was. I think it is sad that this got out because it was something very personnal for her.
I understand where the organization is going stating that photos of a battered Rihanna would help young women realize how real this situation is, and how easily it can happen to any one of them. However, the next photos to be leaked about Rihanna stated that she went back to Chris Brown, which is the opposite effect the organization was looking for. Nice try turning a terrible situation into something good for women, but I do not think it will have the outcome they were hoping for. I would love to say that Rihanna deserves privacy, but she gets paid millions to be in the public eye. Gossip goes with her career.
I think that regardless of what anyone thinks, these pictures were bound to be leaked; because being in the spotlight you are often exposed even when you don't want to be. Even though I feel terrible for Rihanna and it's not right that those pictures were released, I think it's better that we can all learn a lesson from this. I see no problem in putting a positive twist on the situation. This might encourage women to take a stand and be stronger.
