According to the Washington Post, social media rules for journalists should no longer go unwritten. The Post created a list of seven guidelines for their editors and also encourage others to incorporate them into their own communication strategies whether it be for an organization or personal use. Even if you are using social media for personal use the Posts suggest to follow the guidelines in order to prevent damaging your personal or your company's reputation and to protect your professional integrity. Glenn Manishin, partner at Duane Morris LLP, spoke about the risks of social media at the PR News Facebook Conference and said, “Social media is old wine in new bottles: Most of the issues are the same as in the traditional world—if it’s illegal in the physical world, it’s illegal online.” Their guidelines for social media are:
1) Maintain Credibility
2) Avoid Real or Apparent Conflicts
3) Be Professional
4) Promote Transparency
5) Look Before you Link
6) Think In Real-Time
7) Mind the Medium
